Can you train scent discrimination for the utility exercises in as little as three weeks? Yes you can!

The scent discrimination exercise in the Utility obedience class is one that can cause many trainers, and their dogs, unnecessary stress and frustration. This exercise is difficult for trainers to teach because it is not clear to us, as humans, how our dogs actually experience and perceive scent.

While the actual behavior of sniffing to compare and discriminate different smells is very natural to dogs, it can be very difficult for a dog to understand that it should be done on cue and in a controlled manner.
