What is a Kong?~

What is a Kong?

Many people think that a Kong is a chew toy and expect it to be indestructible. They assume that they can throw a Kong to their dog and leave them for hours entertaining themselves. This is not the case. Have you looked at Kong? Would it entertain you for hours?

Kongs are manufactured from vulcanised rubber and are very durable, but their main feature is that they have a hollow centre designed to take food. In fact you could throw away your dog’s food bowls and use a Kong instead.

Dogs are genetically programmed to hunt for their food, and one cause of behavioural problems in domestic dogs is that they have little mental challenge or work to do. Their food is given to them on a plate, literally.

Many Zoos have seen success in reducing behavioural problems and improving the quality of life of their predator and primate species by giving them problems to solve in order to obtain their food. This same concept can be applied to domestic dogs, who thoroughly enjoy the challenge “hunting” for their meals.

Stuffing a Kong~

Stuffing a Kong

Inserting a couple of biscuits in the Kong only scrapes the surface of the creative challenge you can create for your dog with this incredibly useful tool. However you must start slowly and work up.

Your dog won’t automatically know what it should do with a Kong so you have to “train” it to use one. First of all select the correct size Kong for your dog (see size chart). Then start with some simple loose stuffings. You need to block the small hole at the bottom with something and that something needs to be really tasty because you want the dog to work towards it. Liver or peanut butter paste are two good options, or some spreadable cheese.

Next you could use some of your dogs dinner. Then a few treats, for example, Coachies, Natures Menu, dried liver. Then another layer of paste to block the top hole and stop the treats falling out. Finally a small biscuit or similar treat poking out to attract your dogs interest. You could even make your own dog biscuits!

At first your dog may not be up for the challenge, but persevere because it is well worth it. Maybe give him the stuffed Kong instead of his dinner as he may be more inclined to put some effort into it. As he gets used to the game, you can increase the difficulty by packing the stuffing more tightly so that he has to work harder to get his rewards. Try varying the content. You can even stop using your dog's food bowl and feed him this way instead!

In the summer months there is nothing nicer for a dog than a Kong Popsicle. Stuff your Kong and freeze it, then take out and give to your dog. Beware, a Kong Popsicle can be messy!!

Most dogs thrive on the challenge of a Kong, and all differ in their eating approaches as ours demonstrate. Amy and Blitz prefer to take it slowly, whereas Fin just goes straight in. Sophie will take hers to the top of the stairs and drop it down so that the insides are dislodged. Molly eats hers at medium pace and then hangs around to see it Blitz leaves any!

Kong Time Kong Dispenser~

The Kong Time Kong Dispenser!

In addition to being a challenging feeding tool, a Kong can also be a good distraction for your dog when he is on his own. Whilst engrossing himself in the Kong, he will spend less time worrying about where you are or looking for other persuits such as chewing your favourite slipper or chair... But what do you do on those occasions where he will be alone for a little longer?

If your dog uses Small, Medium, or Large Kongs, the Kong Time may offer a solution. It will dispense up to 4 preprepared Kongs at intervals throughout the day to keep him busy. It emits an alarm just before each Kong is dispensed so your dog will know what's coming!

Unfortunately, as much as we would like to spend more time with our dogs, the fact is that most of us have to go out to work every day and your dog is often alone in the home for hours at a time. This can lead to boredom, and boredom can lead to mischievous and even destructive behaviour. Idleness can also produce the kind of couch potato syndrome we see in people. Dogs that are occupied and entertained, in our opinion, are likely to live healthier, happier lives, be prone to less stress, and make better companions.

The Kong Time is a product that helps keep your dog from being bored when you're not at home for extended periods of time. It might also be useful if you work at home and cannot spend much time with your dog. You fill four Kong toys with food. One at a time, they roll out of the machine onto your floor at random intervals, over four or eight hours. Before a toy is dispensed, a sound beeps alerting your dog of what is to come. Working to get the food out of the toy makes the experience more interesting and longer lasting than it would be if the machine just dispensed food.

The Kong Time is an effective boredom buster, and ideal if your dogs enjoy Kong toys.

Kong Time comes complete with batteries, and is suitable for use with 4 small, medium or large kongs. Order your Kong Time and kongs together for even greater value!

Considerations~

Considerations...

We love Kongs and so do our dogs, but if you are going to use them regularly:
  • Remember to reduce any other food you give to your dog to avoid overfeeding
  • Some Kong fillings can be messy.
  • When using fillings not specifically designed for dogs, remember that they may contain ingredients that should be used in moderation.
  • Have as much fun filling a Kong as your dog will have emptying it!
